GENETIC COUNSELLING BEFORE CONCEPTION

It is very important to go for a genetic counseling before conception. Genetic counselors will review you and your spouse’s family medical history to help you understand what may occur or expected or conditions that may be inherited.
These counselors will help you with locations to carry out these tests and the kind of tests that should be done.
Genetic conditions, just as the name implies are conditions emanating from genes and which are usually inherited from one or both parents.
So, it is very important to go for these counseling sessions so that you may understand more about inherited conditions and what causes it and if it can be transferred to your baby. More importantly, it prepares you for what is ahead.
Many of these conditions include cyctic fibrosis, down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, haemochromatosis, haemophilia, huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, neural tube defect etc. other include cancer, diabetes and epilepsy.

If you or your partner have inherited any genetic condition, it is important you talk to your doctor during a genetic counseling.
